Carol (Rubin) Shwidock

My life since TZHS . . . many ups and downs for sure. After college I got my first job as an Occupational Therapist in Taiwan! My college sweet heart Eric had been living there so, off I went. We actually had been engaged then unengaged . . . Fast forward, I fell in love with Brad, and was married for 28 years. I was an O.T. for 25 of those years but feeling the need for a change. Then 911 happened. I quit my job 2 days later. At the around that time my husband was diagnosed with an Auto Immune Liver Disease. I decided I didn’t want to work with Illness anymore so I shifted to become a Yoga Therapist, working with Wellness. Brad and I had two beautiful girls and life was good . . . then he needed a liver transplant. After many months
he did get one and was doing well for about 2 years. Then the disease came back. I decided to see if I could be a match . . . and I WAS! It was a 1% chance. So, I donated 60 % of my liver to Brad with the caveat of “I will give you my liver if you come to Kripalu with me”. Kripalu, where I graduated from as a Yoga Teacher is my home away from home in the Berkshires.

Brad did go with me and on the way home from Kripalu we found out the disease was back . . . Sadly in 2012, only 14 months later, he passed. My yoga practice, students, dear friends and family have kept me thriving and surviving. Then another miracle happened . . . I reconnected with Eric at a college reunion. Long story short it’s been almost 5 years together again, living in sin and engaged once again and life IS good. I have a grandson who is 3.5 and a granddaughter about to be born in 6 weeks! I am still the proud owner of harmonyogastudio.com and just came back from teaching a Yoga Retreat in Costa Rica! Gratefully our very own Donna J came to my retreat last fall in Chester CT. Looking forward to teaching less classes, continuing with Private Yoga Students and 2 retreats a year so I can also  s  l  o  w  down and enjoy this very precious life. My words of wisdom “Pause and notice your Breath. It’s the first thing that happens, it’s the last thing that happens, and it’s a gift to bring you back to the present moment. Take a big breath in thru your nostrils and let it out thru your mouth and say HAAAAA . . . Be happy to BE alive.”

BIG LOVE TO ALL & NAMASTE,
Carol
