Fifty years ago, we walked out those TZ doors, some of us with plans and others, like myself, not quite knowing where the road would lead.
I spent most of the years since then practicing law, often standing beside people who didn’t have much but still deserved someone on their side.
Ice hockey remained part of the story. I spent many years coaching kids, including my son, and had the good fortune of coaching the first team from the Southeast to win a USA Hockey National Championship.
Along the journey, my son graduated from the American Film Institute with an MFA in film directing. He then convinced me to help him make his first feature film-one of life’s better adventures. The film brought me back to New York when it first premiered at the Tribeca film festival.
As Bob Dylan famously wrote in the song “My Back Pages,” “Ah, but I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now.” I understand that line a little better now than I did back then.
For me, the best part of the journey has been watching my son build his own life and now seeing a grandson beginning his. Looking back at the rock and roll generation we came from, I’m still amazed at the road the years have carried us down, and mindful of the family and friends who started the journey with but aren’t here to see where it led.
